Dallas Dog Bite Attorneys

Being the victim of a dog attack can be extremely traumatic and dangerous. Often, the victim of such attacks are children; their injuries can be fatal. Specific laws vary by state. Most states hold the dog's owner strictly liable for the dog’s behavior in an unprovoked attack: that is, an incident in which the victim did nothing to cause the attack. Where or when the attack took place, and whether or not it was the animals first attack makes no difference in states with strick liability. Other states give dogs “one free bite,” meaning that it is assumed that the owner did not know of the danger before the bite and therefore cannot be held liable.

If you are a dog owner, take these steps to minimize the possibility of your dog attacking someone:

  • Fix (spay or neuter) your dog
  • Avoid teaching your dog "rough play"
  • Keep vaccinations up-to-date
  • Consider obedience classes to encourage adherence to voice commands
  • Never leave infants or young children alone with a dog
  • Keep your dog in a fence

Basic safety tips:

  • Do not interact with strange dogs
  • Leave does alone while they are eating, sleeping, or caring for puppies
  • Allow a dog to see you and smell you before trying to pet it
  • Always supervise children interacting with a dog
  • Avoid aggression with dogs: do not stare dogs in the eye or run from them
  • If a dog does attack, stay still
  • If a dog knocks you down, roll into a ball to protect yourself

Seek help quickly if you are attacked. Medical care is the first priority, then try to find out the name of the dog's owner.
